(Pb, Ca)Sr2(Ca, Y)Cu2Oy which is a 1:2:1:2 compound with a (Pb, Ca)O mixed monolayer has been made superconducting by careful control of heating and annealing procedures at elevated oxygen pressure. There are two essential steps for getting the highest T(c) (T(c) > 60 K): (1) heating at 900-950-degrees-C under high P(O2) approximately 100 bar and (2) fast quenching to room temperature. In a sample so prepared the oxygen content has the stoichiometric value of 7.0, Pb is in the Pb4+ state and T(c) = 60 K. If the sample is slowly cooled under high oxygen pressure it picks up more oxygen, and this excess oxygen reduces T(c) and finally destroys the superconductivity. This behavior is similar to that of the compound (Pb, Cu)Sr2(Ca, Y)Cu2Oy.
