A FAST DECAY MEASUREMENT OF ION-INDUCED LUMINESCENCE - RADIATIVE AND NONRADIATIVE ANNIHILATION OF CORE HOLES PRODUCED IN A BAF2 SINGLE-CRYSTAL

A mechanism of linear energy transfer (LET) dependent competition between radiative and nonradiative annihilation of Ba5p core holes is developed and a LET-dependent efficiency of formation of the core holes is shown. This efficiency, i.e. the initial rise of luminescence decay, was measured. Also, a drastic LET dependence of 3100 angstrom luminescence decay due to self-trapped excitons (STE) is shown. A technique for fast decay measurements of luminescence, which has a time resolution approximately 100 ps, is shown in some detail.
