The anisotropy of vapor-deposited Co/Ni multilayers has been studied as a function of Co and Ni layer thickness. Following a recent theoretical prediction, a strong perpendicular anisotropy was found for a [111] Co1/Ni2 multilayer. It is caused by interface anisotropy with K(s) = 0.31 mJ/m2 and is favoured by internal stresses. The anisotropy constant K, which could reach a value of 680 kJ/m3, was found to depend sensitively on various deposition details. Depending on the total multilayer thickness, hysteresis loops could show full remanence with a coercivity which could be varied from 40 up to 170 kA/m.
