LETHAL ORBITO-CEREBRAL PHYCOMYCOSIS - IN OTHERWISE HEALTHY CHILDREN

Orbito-cerebral phycomycosis generally is seen in uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, systemic disorders leading to acidosis and as a complication of intensive cancer therapy, particularly in patients with leukemia. A common clinical picture is a rapidly fatal unilateral orbital-apex syndrome with intracranial involvement. A three-year-old child and 11-year-old boy in previous good health were treated with antibiotics for sinusitis, subsequently developed a unilateral orbitalapex syndrome and died of intracranial involvement. © 1969.
