Copper-lead alloys are widely used in tribological applications. A major constraint in using these alloys is the limited solubility of lead in copper by standard melting techniques. A newly developed, continuous-casting procedure was employed to produce homogeneous alloys of Cu-Pb with lead content greater than 40 wt.%. The friction and wear behavior of these alloys was studied by using a pin-on-disk test rig. Results indicate that an increase in lead content up to a specific value caused a reduction in the coefficient of friction. An increase in wear load permitted a transition from high friction to low friction as a result of "squeezing out" of lead onto the surface. The effects of alloy composition and homogeneity of microstructures on frictional behavior are also discussed.
