Mechanical actuators composed of material possessing piezo-electric properties have been tested with a view to assessing quantitatively the effectiveness of these actuators for use as displacement and/or correction devices in precise mechanical systems. Specifically, a mechanical system involving the Burleigh PZ40 pusher and PZ70 hv dc Op Amp was tested. Input-output measurements presented demonstrate the distortion, gain, and nonlinearities inherent in the application of these actuators to mechanical systems. Important parameters are considered and applicability is discussed.
