FERROMAGNETISM IN LANTHANUM AND OR CERIUM SUBSTITUTED T' PHASES OF GADOLINIUM CUPRATE

We have studied the effects of defect structure and electron-doping on the parasitic ferromagnetism in polycrystalline samples of the Gd2-xLaxCuO4 and Gd1.85-xLaxCe0.15CuO4 with 0 less-than-or-equal-to x less-than-or-equal-to 1 solid solution series, crystallizing with T structure. In each of these series, below a critical value of the a cell parameter, a(c), the onset of ferromagnetism due to a canted arrangement of antiferromagnetically ordered copper moments was observed. The a(c) values in each of these series were found to vary depending on the synthetic conditions and cerium substitution at the rare earth site. These effects were attributed to differences in the defect structure and electronic structure. The Gd1.85-xLaxCe0.15CuO4 compositions were also investigated to examine the occurrence of superconductivity, if any, in these phases.
