Rietveld analysis of powder XRD data for two nonsuperconducting La1.6Sr0.4CaCu2Oy ceramics which had similar oxygen content (<0.1 per formula at y=6) and showed different electrical resistive properties was carried out. It revealed that strontium occupied 2a site in order to eliminate the size mismatch in the a-b plane between apical and bottom sides of Cu-O5 pyramid, and that the sample with higher resistivity has a longer distance between two copper atoms in the Cu-O5 pyramidal bottom facing each other. It is considered that the observed remarkable difference in resistivity was caused by small changes in oxygen content and/or location of copper atoms. © 1990.
