CHARACTERIZATION OF FUNGAL SPORES USING FLOW-CYTOMETRY

Flow cytometry was used to analyse the light scattering properties and DNA contents of spores of five basidiomycetes and one myxomycete. Measurements of forward light scatter and DNA fluorescence allowed the discrimination of all six of the spore types examined. Subpopulations were evident in samples of Megacollybia platyphylla and Fuligo septica which would not have been detected using conventional techniques. Flow cytometry was demonstrated to be a powerful and elegant technique for the study of fungal spores.
