USE OF ROOT ELONGATION STUDIES TO DETERMINE ALUMINUM AND LEAD TOXICITY IN PICEA-ABIES SEEDLINGS

摘要
The effect of various supplies of aluminium and lead, singly and in combination, on root elongation of Picea abies seedlings was investigated. Exposure to 50, 100 or 800-mu-M Al inhibited root elongation within 1 day. In the 50 and 200-mu-M treatments root elongation recovered completely after 5 or 8 days exposure, respectively. At higher Al supply (800 or 1200-mu-M) root elongation was inhibited over the duration of the experiment. Differences in Al tolerance were found between individual seedlings. Lead supplied at 0.5-2.0-mu-M Pb also inhibited root elongation, and no recovery of root elongation was found. Inhibition of root elongation by Pb was lessened by the presence of Al.
