Integrated optic polarization independent switches on X-cut Ti:LiNbO3 are realized. An interferometric switch on X-cut Z-propagating LiNbO3 utilizes passive polarization independent intersecting waveguide 3 dB couplers. Optical broad-band operation, 25 dB extinction ratio at 20 V switching voltage and 1.8 GHz bandwidth are obtained. Polarization independent switches on X-cut Y-propagating LiNbO3 based on polarization converters and intersecting waveguide couplers designed as passive polarization splitters are fabricated and investigated. They yield an inherently defined switching state at zero voltage, low switching voltage of only 11 V with electrooptic polarization conversion. Devices with extinction ratio of 25 dB and low fiber coupled insertion losses < 5 dB are presented. Applying acoustooptic polarization conversion with SAW-transducers at 180 MHz yields acoustooptic tunable wavelength selective filters/switches with a wide tuning range of the center wavelength from lambda = 1.3-mu-m to lambda = 1.56-mu-m and below 4 dB fiber-coupled insertion loss.
