Hard-segment crystallization is a primary factor governing the properties of copoly(ether-ester) elastomers composed of poly(tetramethylene oxide) soft segments and poly(tetramethylene terephthalate) and/or poly(tetramethylene isophthalate) hard segments. Differential scanning calorimetry, tensile testing, and small-angle X-ray scattering have been used to follow the structure and property changes occurring during the room-temperature crystallization of copoly(ether-ester) elastomers in which poly(tetramethylene isophthalate) is the major hard-segment component. The measurements show that crystallization leads to significant improvements in tensile properties, particularly as the sample crystalline weight fraction increases from 0. 05 to 0. 10.
