ABSOLUTE TRANSITION PROBABILITIES IN ULTRAVIOLET MOLECULAR SPECTRA

The radiative lifetimes of seventeen excited states in H2, N2, N2+, CO, CO+, NO, NO +, BF, CF, BCl, and CO2+ have been measured by the phase-shift technique of Lawrence. The measured lifetimes were derived from transitions in the 960-4500-Å region and range from 0.6 nsec in H 2 to 118 nsec in CO2+. Particular attention has been paid to the understanding and elimination of possible sources of systematic errors in the absolute phase shift measurements. The lifetimes have been combined with measured and calculated emission intensities to derive electric dipole transition moments and absorption oscillator strengths for the diatomic band systems.
