SIMPLE METHOD FOR APPROXIMATE DETERMINATION OF S-METHYLCYSTEINE SULFOXIDE (KALE ANEMIA FACTOR)

摘要
The S-methylcysteine sulfoxide [SMCO] content of kale (Brassica oleracea var. acephala) apparently causes anemia in ruminants. A method based on TLC and visual comparison with standards is described to determine SMCO in a large number of samples with little labor, apparatus or staff. The presence of SMCO in some plants and its absence in others was confirmed and the method was sufficiently sensitive to reveal varietal differences within a species.
