COMPARISON OF PHYSICAL-PROPERTIES OF ZRF4-BASED AND HFF4-BASED MELTS AND GLASSES

Physical property measurements have been carried out on a series of three glass-forming heavy metal fluoride compositions in which ZrF4 has been systematically replaced by HfF4. The generic composition (mol%) is 53xZrF4-53(1-x)HfF4-20BaF2-4LaF3-3AlF3-20NaF, with x values of 1, 0.5 and 0. Properties measured include melt viscosities over a range 10(-1)-10(13) P and glass and melt electrical conductivities, densities and heat capacities. Replacement of ZrF4 by HfF4 increases the glass transition temperature and the 10(13) P temperature by about 10-degrees-C. Aside from this, replacement of ZrF4 by HfF4 has very little effect on the other physical properties.
