A soil moisture simulation model was developed to provide the necessary data for evaluating the potential success of rainfed agriculture in a region bordering the Red River in Vietnam. The model considers rain infiltration, evaporation, redistribution, and water uptake by plant roots. A Markov-chain model was used to generate daily rainfall for the simulation of soil moisture contents under normal and dry years. The model was validated using field data for three soil types in the region. Application of the model for assessing the possibilities of rainfed agriculture under the specified conditions is outlined. The analysis results, in terms of moisture conditions showed that the model is capable of indicating the stress days for crops grown in the region. The most appropriate planting date to minimize water stress can be determined.
