POSSIBLE USE OF MIXED-CRYSTALS TO FOCUS ION-BEAMS

摘要
Starting from the fact that ion beams can be channelled in monocrystals we propose the use of crystals with a spatially changing composition to focus ion beams. The smoothly changing composition is associated with a smooth change in the lattice constant resulting in a slightly conical crystal. As channelled beams follow the direction of the crystal axes such a crystal could act as a lens. Promising systems are Cu-Ni and Sb-Bi. Possible applications for focusing crystals are discussed.
