EFFECT OF THE REFERENCE WAVE IN AUGER-ELECTRON HOLOGRAPHY

We investigate the effect of the angular-momentum character of the emitted wave on Auger electron diffraction patterns, and on the form of holographically reconstructed images of scattering atoms in the vicinity of the emitter. We find that this can have as much effect on the nature of the reconstructed image as the anisotropy of the atomic scattering factors. As in the case of the scattering factors, isotropy of the reference wave is the optimum form for good image reconstruction. We show with both model calculations and experimental Auger electron diffraction data that a reconstruction algorithm which simultaneously corrects for the anisotropy of both source and scatterer in capable of reproducing atom images at their correct positions even in the case of non-s-wave emitters.
