A new approach is presented, that enables on-tine detection of large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and fullerenes in premixed flat low-pressure flames by molecular beam resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization mass spectrometry (REMPI-MS). A multi-pass mirror system for the laser beam was developed to increase the amount of ions formed. In benzene/oxygen flames, PAH with molecular masses up to more than 10(3) u were observed. For the first time, this method has also provided on-line mass spectra of electrically neutral flame-generated fullerenes (C32 to about C300) after the investigation of fullerene flame ions. The fragmentation induced by laser irradiation is discussed.
