INVESTIGATION OF THE BACKGROUND GAMMA SPECTRUM IN AN UNDERGROUND ENVIRONMENT

摘要
A sodium iodide crystal detector has been used to measure the gamma-ray spectrum in a deep underground environment. This has been corrected for detector efficiency and compared to that expected from (n, gamma) interactions in the surrounding rock. The observed flux is found to be greater than that predicted. This is shown to be partly due to internal activity of the detector and partly to (n, gamma) interactions in the surrounding laboratory equipment and support structures, a significant source of gammas in such an environment.
