As an alternative to the oxygen electrodes currently used in bioreactors, a sterilizable optical oxygen sensor is described which is based on the principle of fluorescence quenching of organic compounds by molecular oxygen. The design of oxygen-sensing elements according to the theoretical background and the sensor design is described. Some representative results for the sensing elements as well as a comparison of the properties of the optical oxygen sensor and a commercial polarographic oxygen electrode are described. The advantages of this new measurement technique are summarized.
