Photosystem I particles from Prochlorothrix hollandica were isolated from dodecylmaltoside solubilized thylakoid membranes on sucrose gradients in the presence of dodecylmaltoside. The particles were characterized by electron microscopy and image reconstriction techniques. The lowest, major green band in the gradient contained trimeric Photosystem I particles with features similar to Photosystem I from cyanobacteria. No evidence for an association of the chlorophyll a/b-binding antenna with Photosystem I was found. The trimeric association of Photosystem I appears to be a generally occurring aggregation mechanism in oxygenic prokaryotes.
