Metal particle based recording tapes have come into general use in video and audio (RDAT) applications within the last few years. The use of these tapes for data storage applications is rapidly also becoming a reality, but concerns for data integrity in the computer storage industry warrant further scrutiny of the long-term stability of these inherently metastable metal particles. Studies of the oxidation of typical metal particle tapes in accelerated environments have been performed. Analysis of reaction products and the role of diffusion-controlled mechanisms allow predictions of long-term stabilities. Parallel studies of data stabilities are shown to support these conclusions.
