Fe-Ti alloys corresponding to the composition FeTi//2 can form icosahedral quasicrystals from the melt during rapid solidification. The morphology consists of imperfect nodules with a tendency for primary dendritic growth and encirclement by metastable beta titanium. These metastable phases compete with the FeTi//2 phase which is also not observed under equilibrium conditions. The authors carried out experiments to delineate the hierarchy of the metastable phase formation. In the process they discovered a quasicrystalline eutectic reaction followed by the formation of a metastable large cell cubic phase. Orientation relationships between the icosahedral phase and the crystalline phase are given.
