摘要
Free particles form clusters by inelastic collisions. When the number N of particles is finite, the motion is one-dimensional, and the coefficient of restitution is zero, collisions cease within a finite time and the particles are grouped into clusters of various sizes. It was recently found through numerical experiments that the average number of clusters of size n is 1 n, n = 1, 2, ..., N, for any N. Here we prove this fact mathematically under more general assumptions than those of the reported experiments. Thus, a particle belongs finally to a cluster of size n with the equal probability 1 n. Additional statistical properties are also discussed. © 1990.
