HIGH-TEMPERATURE OXIDATION OF FE-CR-(AL) AND FE-CR-NI ALLOYS UNDER TENSILE-STRESS

Wire specimens were oxidized under a constant load in O//2 or in air at 1173K. In the case of ferritic alloys (Fe-20Cr and Fe-18Cr) the absence of acceleration is attributed to rapid healing of scale by a large diffusion rate of Cr. Oxidation of Fe-20Cr-12Ni was accelerated under an average strain rate of 2. 8 multiplied by 10** minus **6 s** minus **1 and the oxidation of Fe-17Cr-6Ni alloy was severely accelerated due to smaller diffusion rates. A threshold of average strain rate to acceleration was of the order 2 multiplied by 10** minus **6 s** minus **1.
