摘要
The kinetic energy dependence of collision-induced dissociation (CID) of cluster ions of niobium with xenon has been investigated using guided ion beam mass spectrometry. Dissociation energies for ionic and neutral niobium clusters of up to eleven atoms are reported. The dependence of the CID cross-sections on Xe pressure, a phenomenon reported previously, is thoroughly investigated and a protocol for analysis which properly takes this effect into account is established. Lifetime effects are allowed for by employing an RRKM formalism in the cross-section modeling routine. The results are found to be in excellent agreement with the spherical drop model for convergence to bulk. The derived bond strengths as a function of cluster size inspire some speculations regarding cluster structure.
