摘要
Two-dimensional crystals of the protein streptavidin form on lipid monolayers containing biotinylated lipids. Introducing avidin as a noncrystallizable contaminant induced dendritic growth of the streptavidin crystals. Increasing the proportion of avidin to streptavidin shifted the dendritic streptavidin crystal morphology from amorphous fingers to needlelike structures. These results provide insight into the mechanism and dynamics of the two-dimensional protein crystallization process.
