Stable, multicomponent, calcium aluminate glasses containing small concentrations of Nd3+ were prepared in order to investigate their spectroscopic properties. The densities, refractive indices, Abbe numbers, UV/visible absorption spectra, and fluorescent decay times were obtained experimentally. These data were used in conjunction with the Judd-Ofelt model to calculate emission cross-sections, radiative lifetimes, quantum efficiencies and branching ratios for these glasses. The possible physical significance of the Judd-Ofelt parameters and the behavior of the calcium aluminate glasses compared with conventional laser host materials are discussed.
