Mathematical ability assessed by computer

This paper describes an educational experiment that took place at the Heriot-Walt University in Edinburgh during the Autumn Term 1994. As part of the Mathwise Project, 40% of the mathematics assessment for the students' first year has been undertaken by a computer program. The computer set and marked a class of 82 students as they took part in their final assessment in Mathematics sitting at the computer keyboard. This paper explains the process adopted to ensure the smooth delivery of this novel technical event and highlights the educational issues raised by using the computer to help teachers with assessment. Aspects of security, human-computer interface and educational matters such as partial credit are all discussed. Some implications for the future complete this account.
