Metallophthalocyanines (MPc) are of interest as catalysts, electrocatalysts, organic conductors, photoconductors, photovoltaic materials, etc. However, almost all MPc compounds are slightly soluble in organic solvents, so it is necessary to prepare soluble phthalocyanine compounds. We have studied the preparation as well as the chemical and physical functions of some soluble MPc derivatives containing functional groups in the peripheral sites and polymers derived from them. We have developed a synthesis of water soluble MPc which have methylolamide groups. These compounds are useful as formaldehyde condensation monomers of urea, melamine, and phenol. In this letter, we report the synthesis and characterization of MPc methylolamide derivatives and the formaldehyde condensation of these compounds with methylolurea.
