摘要
In the same way as the defect chemistry determines internal thermodynamics and bulk properties, a defect chemistry of boundary regions is needed if interfacial effects are considered. It is outlined how to achieve this in general for a mixed ionic electronic conductor. Emphasis is put on ionic conductivity anomalies and catalytic properties in heterogeneous systems, and sensing effects involving solid ion conductor surfaces. Phase transitions at interfaces are briefly touched upon.
