摘要:
We present results obtained with the Position Sensitive Proportional Counter on ROSAT of the first X-ray detection of a powerful distant radio galaxy, 3C 356. The X-ray source has a luminosity of approximately 2.5 x 10(44) erg s-1, mostly from the region spanned by the radio lobes. The spectrum shows no evidence of strong intrinsic absorption. Such absorption is observed in the nuclei of nearby powerful radio galaxies, implying that the X-rays from 3C 356 are probably from a dense halo of hot gas, cooling at a rate of 500-1500 M. yr-1.
