PREPARATION AND SOME PHYSICAL-PROPERTIES OF SUPERCONDUCTING LA3-XS4 AND LA3-YBAYS4

The superconducting chalcogenides with the Th3P4-type structure, La3-xS4 (0 less than or equal to x<1/3), La3-yBayS4 (0 less than or equal to y less than or equal to 1.0) were prepared and their structural, electrical and magnetic properties were studied. Both the nonstoichiometry and the substitution of Ba depress the superconductivity. La3-yBayS4 changes from a metal to a semiconductor with increasing y, while La3-xS4 remains metal. A remarkable difference between La3-xS4 and La3-yBayS4 was also observed in the compositional dependence of the lattice parameters.
