STRUCTURAL CHARACTERIZATION OF POLYANILINE FREE STANDING FILMS

Free standing films of polyaniline in its emeraldine base form have been cast from N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone solution. These films have been characterised via FTIR and solid state C-13 NMR to unambiguously reveal the chain structure of the emeraldine. The optical spectrum of the films in both the base and salt forms has been measured. Further, these free standing films have been oriented using uniaxial stress. These aligned films have shown conductivities which range up to 350 Scm-1, two orders of magnitude higher than those previously reported for polyaniline. For the first time we have been able to probe the intrinsic physics of polyaniline.
