SOLVENT POLARITY EFFECTS ON INTRAMOLECULAR ELECTRON-TRANSFER - AN ESTIMATE OF ACTIVATION ENTROPIES

摘要
Electron-transfer rates were determined in solvents of different polarity as a function of temperature and analyzed in terms of activation energies and pre-exponential factors. Both were found to depend on the polarity of the solvent. The solvent dependence of the pre-exponential factor is interpreted as evidence for different activation entropies due to sizable reaction and (possibly) reorganization entropies. Theoretical estimates of differences in the activation entropies taking account of temperature-dependent reaction free energies and solvent reorganization energies are in qualitative agreement with the experiments. © 1990.
