MEASUREMENT OF ICE NUCLEATION IN LICHENS USING THERMAL-ANALYSIS

摘要
The temperature at which freezing was initiated within five lichen species was determined using thermal analysis. All of the species tested froze above -4 °C, indicating the association of heterogeneous ice nucleation active agents effective at warm temperatures. Ice nucleation activity was expressed over a range of tissue moisture contents. The results of the present study confirmed earlier reports that lichen tissues were a source of biological ice nucleation activity. In addition, these studies demonstrated that ice nucleation activity is a characteristic of intact lichen tissues and is expressed under conditions representative of those in nature. © 1992.
