A fan model filter consists of multiple layers of parallel, equidistant cylinders, having axes oriented randomly to each other and perpendicular to the direction of flow. Regular wire screens with uniform wire diameters and openings resemble the fan model filter. This report describes measurements of the pressure drop across layers of screens and the single-fiber collection efficiency of screens for monodisperse aerosols. Our results on several different mesh screens agreed with the theoretical prediction from fan model filtration. In the size range of 0. 01 to 1. 0 mu m, the diffusion and interception mechanisms were responsible for aerosol collection. Further, minimum efficiency existed for particle sizes between 0. 4 and 0. 7 mu m, where the transition between diffusion and interception occurred. This report also describes the application of these results using these screens in a diffusion battery as cell material.
