EFFECT OF ION IMPURITIES ON A BINARY MIXTURE OF ISOBUTYRIC ACID AND WATER

摘要
The influence of the salts CsBr (10(-3) M) and Gd(NO3)3 (5 x 10(-4) M) on the coexistence curve of a binary mixture of isobutyric acid and water (I-W) is investigated. The data are obtained by refractive index measurements. The shifts in critical amplitudes (temperature, concentration, etc.) are determined. The exponent beta of the coexistence curve is compatible with the Ising model (beta almost-equal-to 0.325) in both I-W and in the I-W + CsBr mixture. In the I-W + Gd(NO3)3 mixture, the exponent is slightly larger and suggests an impurity-induced Fisher renormalized value.
