Ru(II), Cu(II), and Mn(II) complexes of an unsymmetrical macrocycle Me containing pyrazole and amine nitrogen atoms as donor sites have been synthesized and studied in the solid state and in solution. Whereas Cu(II) and Mn(II) metals are complexed inside the macrocyclic cavity, the reaction of Me with Ru(DMSO)(4)Cl-2 leads to a complex Ru(Mc)(DMSO)(2)Cl-2 in which only the two sp(3) nitrogen donors are coordinated to the metal. In spite of these different structures, the three complexes compete with nitroblue tetrazolium toward the superoxide anion: the corresponding SOD-like activities are not very high but have the essential advantage of being totally [Ru(II) and Mn(II) complexes] or partially [Cu(II) complex] retained in the presence of water soluble proteins.
