SOLID-STATE REACTION AT ROOM-TEMPERATURE OF CERIUM AND GOLD IN EVAPORATED-FILMS

摘要
X-ray photoemission measurements have been performed on the Ce/Au system. Analysis of core level intensities reveals formation of a mixed interface when cerium is deposited on a polycrystalline gold film. Shifts by 0.8 eV to higher binding energies are observed in the Au 4f core levels as Ce is deposited. These shifts are contrary to expectations based on electronegatives, and may be explained by changes in final state screening caused by alloying of Ce and Au. The interface is estimated to reach a thickness of ∼ 50 Å, and the average volume fraction of gold is twice that of cerium. © 1990.
