Femtosecond time-resolved coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) has been observed for the fundamental band of the C = N stretching mode (2252 cm-1) of acetonitrile. The CARS signal for the C = N stretching shows a non-exponential decay. This signal behavior is attributed to interference between fundamental and hot-band transitions. It is shown that the dephasing of the C = N stretching becomes faster with increasing hydrogen-bonding ability of the solvent (proton donor).
