2-DIMENSIONAL ELECTRON CORRELATION IN HIGH MAGNETIC-FIELDS

High magnetic fields, combined with low temperatures, can quench the kinetic energy of two-dimensional electron systems leaving the Coulomb interaction between electrons as the dominating force. Under such extreme conditions electron-electron correlation leads to the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) and possibly to the formation of an electron solid. This paper reviews the recent developments in this active research field. It focuses on experimental data accumulated from measurements of the electrical transport parameters. In the FQHE, the importance of the electron spin and the impact of this additional degree of freedom is emphasized. In the electron solid regime the focus is on the concept of re-entrance which suggests that electron solids and quantum liquids appear successively and repeatedly as the magnetic field tends towards infinity.
