Zea mays seedling damage by Agrotis ipsilon introduced as 3rd instars 5 d before planting was most severe when weeds were removed at the coleoptile stage and larvae were predicted to be 5th to 6th instars. Delaying weed removal until plants had attained the 2-leaf stage significantly decreased the percentage of corn plants damaged by larvae. Delaying weed removal until 4-leaf stage corn resulted in significant grain yield reductions from both weed competition and A. ipsilon damage in 1984 and only from weed competition in 1985. -from Authors
