Primary thioamides were photolysed by UV light in a nitrogen atmosphere to the corresponding nitriles with evolution of H2S. Irradiation in the presence of oxygen gave nitriles, amides, carboxylic acids and 3,5-disubstituted-1,2,4-thiadiazoles together with sulphur, SO2 and SO42- but no H2S. Secondary and tertiary thioamides were stable under both conditions. Singlet oxygen oxidation of primary thioamides gave products identical with those of the non-sensitized photo-oxidation. Singlet oxygen also reacted with secondary and tertiary thioamides forming the corresponding amides with expulsion of sulphur. Reaction pathways for the formation of the observed products are discussed. © 1990.
