Electrochromic WO3 films in well-defined colouration states were characterized by ESCA, optical and electrical measurements. The relationship between optical density and Pauling charge has been confirmed by optical spectroscopy for evaporated amorphous WO3 films. Changes from WO3 to hydrogen tungsten bronze were traced with the aid of electrical measurements to determine the introduced charge. The change in electronic structure from W6+ to the light-absorbing species W5+ was proved by ESCA by chemical shifts of the 4f doublet. Using a new deconvolution procedure, it was possible to correlate the ratio [W5+]/[Wtot] quantitatively with Pauling charge and, therefore, to the optical density of electrochronic WO3. © 1990.
