INTEGRATION OF PLASMID P-PHI-HL INTO PHAGE GENOMES DURING INFECTION OF HALOBACTERIUM-HALOBIUM R1-L WITH PHAGE PHI-HL1

摘要
The plasmid p.PHI.HL, which arose by circularization of the invertible L segment of phage .PHI.H, integrates into phage DNA during growth of phage .PHI.HL1 on the H. halobium strain R1-L. More than 1% of all phage DNA isolated from such a lysate contains integrated p.PHI.HL. Recombination between the plasmid and the homologous L segment in the phage genome occurs with equally high frequency on both sides of a 1 kilobase insertion present in .PHI.HL1 DNA but absent from p.PHI.HL. Homologous recombination is an important factor in the generation of DNA rearrangements in H. halobium.
