H-1 MAS NMR has been used to study the chemistry of methanol adsorbed on zeolite H-ZSM-5 and several Si,Al- and Si,Al,P-based molecular sieves. Methanol forms the CH3OH2+ methoxonium ion and is hydrogen-bonded in the intracrystalline space. We suggest that charged clusters of methanol molecules associated with each Bronsted acid site are present at high coverages; at low coverages each methanol molecule is bound at a Bronsted acid site. In zeolite Na-ZSM-5 methanol is coordinatively adsorbed on the cation.
