The general equations of the vibrations of high speed rotating shells of revolution, with consideration of Coriolis accelerations and large deformations, are established by the method of linear approximation. In the general case, there are great difficulties in obtaining analytical solutions of the general dynamic equations. A nine nodes curvilinear superparametric finite element is used to solve the problems of vibrations of high speed rotating shells of revolution. As an example the vibrations of rotating cylindrical shells have been calculated by the finite element method and the results are compared with the analytical solutions for cylindrical shells with special boundary conditions. The results coincide with those of other authors. No resonance frequency is found as the rotational speed of the cylindrical shells is increased from zero to working speed. With the finite element method calculations can be carried out for complicated structures such as those of rotors which are made up of several kinds of shells of revolution. The linear approximation method can also be used in other large deformation problems. © 1993 Academic Press Limited.
