摘要
Investigation of a tribological failure is best carried out by following a series of steps, beginning with the obtaining of data on the failed mechanism, and inspection of the failed surfaces; then the computation of tribologically significant parameters, including wear volume, wear particle size and frictional heating. This is followed by the consultation of reference books and the carrying out of laboratory studies to test preliminary conclusions. It is hoped that a comprehensive explanation of what went wrong emerges, and this will suggest tests which will critically evaluate the explanation, and suggest ways of avoiding future failures. © 1990.
